DETOX IS MORE THAN JUST PHYSICAL: THE JOURNEY TO EMOTIONAL CLEANSING

By Nurma Dippenaar - Functional Medicine Certified Health Coach

EMOTIONAL DETOX: FREEING YOUR MIND AND BODY FROM TOXIC EMOTIONS

When we delve into the realm of detoxification, it often conjures images of green smoothies and fasting regimens designed to cleanse the body of physical toxins. However, there is a facet of detoxification that transcends the boundaries of nutrition and exercise, one that reaches deep into the recesses of our minds and emotions. Just like our bodies accumulate physical toxins, our minds can also harbour toxic emotions. These emotional toxins can have a profound impact on our physical health, affecting the gut-brain axis, inflammation, the immune system, cognitive health, and hormonal balance among others. Let’s explore what toxic emotions are and delve into some of their far-reaching effects on our bodies.

UNDERSTANDING TOXIC EMOTIONS

It's important to note that emotions, including negative ones, like anger, fear, sadness, and disgust are a natural and integral part of life. They are our body's way of responding to the world around us. While it's natural to feel these emotions the problem arises when they become chronic and overwhelming. If left unchecked to accumulate and fester, they can become toxic to our overall health. Just like physical toxins, toxic emotions can collect and wreak havoc on our well-being.

EMOTIONAL CLEANSING: THE FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE APPROACH TO OPTIMAL WELL-BEING

Functional medicine, rooted in the belief that the mind and body are intrinsically

interconnected, provides a lens through which we can understand this profound relationship. It underscores that the thoughts and emotions we experience are not confined to our minds; instead, they have tangible effects on our physical health.

Emotions primarily originate in the brain's limbic system, which includes crucial structures like the amygdala and hypothalamus. The hypothalamus, one of the key brain regions in this process, initiates the body's stress response by activating our Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS)—our body's "fight, flight, or freeze” response. This SNS activation leads to increased heart rate, elevated blood pressure, and the release of stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. Over time, this chronic state of stress can induce inflammation and weaken our immune system.

Moreover, emotions extend their reach beyond the brain, affecting the Enteric Nervous System (ENS), often dubbed the "second brain" residing in our gut. This disruption leads to various changes within the gut-brain axis that affects the digestive system. Unmanaged negative emotions can disrupt the ENS's delicate balance, potentially contributing to gastrointestinal discomfort and disorders like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

Conversely, nurturing positive emotions and maintaining emotional equilibrium can foster a healthier ENS, promoting improved digestion and overall gut health. This profound connection between emotional well-being and the ENS emphasises the critical importance of emotional management for digestive health and overall vitality.

Positive emotions and thoughts also hold the key to activating our Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS)—our body's natural state of relaxation and healing, often referred to as the “rest and digest state”. This shift not only counteracts the detrimental effects of stress but also aligns with overall well-being and resilience. A state of relaxation diverts resources toward healing and restoration, promoting a calmer, more balanced physiological state.

THE GUT-BRAIN AXIS: WHERE EMOTIONS MEET THE GUT

The gut-brain axis is a complex, bidirectional communication network connecting our gut and brain. It plays a pivotal role in maintaining overall health. Interestingly, emotions can significantly influence this axis. When we experience toxic emotions, the gut-brain axis becomes activated. This activation triggers a series of responses within the digestive system, including changes in gut motility, blood flow, and the secretion of digestive enzymes. Emotional distress that affects the gut can furthermore compromise immune function because the gut houses a large portion of the body's immune cells and helps orchestrate the immune response.

EMOTIONS AND IMMUNITY: THE SILENT HEALTH SABOTEURS

Our emotional states can profoundly influence immune function. Chronic stress and toxic emotions can weaken the immune system by altering the balance of immune cells. Stress hormones, such as cortisol, can suppress the immune response, by reducing the activity of immune cells, including T cells and B cells, making the body more susceptible to infections. T Cells (T Lymphocytes), directly attack and destroy infected or abnormal cells, playing a key role in cell-mediated immunity.

B Cells (B Lymphocytes) produce antibodies that recognize and neutralize specific antigens, contributing to humoral immunity and the immune system's ability to target pathogens.

Additionally, stress can reduce the production of natural killer (NK) cells, which play a crucial role in cancer surveillance.

Negative emotions can also disrupt our circadian rhythm, the body's natural internal clock regulating sleep and wake cycles. Sleep disturbances resulting from stress and anxiety can further compromise immune function.

THE TOLL ON INFLAMMATION

Chronic inflammation is a hallmark of many chronic diseases, including autoimmune conditions, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. Toxic emotions can play a significant role in regulating the body's inflammatory response by increasing levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α). This heightened inflammatory response can contribute to the development and progression of inflammatory diseases.

Moreover, chronic inflammation resulting from toxic emotions can disrupt insulin signalling, leading to insulin resistance and an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. It can also damage blood vessels, contributing to atherosclerosis and heart disease.

COGNITIVE HEALTH AND TOXIC EMOTIONS

Toxic emotions often contribute to chronic inflammation in the body, including neuroinflammation in the brain, which is increasingly recognized as a common feature of cognitive decline and dementia. Stress-induced cortisol production can shrink the hippocampus, our memory and learning centre, making it tougher to remember and recall information.

So, those toxic emotions aren't just weighing on our hearts; they're taking a toll on our minds, potentially leading to memory issues and increasing the risk of cognitive disorders

like dementia.

HORMONAL HIJACK: HOW TOXIC EMOTIONS TAKE CONTROL

Emotions have a profound impact on hormone balance. Toxic emotions, a type of chronic stress, can disrupt this delicate equilibrium, resulting in mood disorders, irregular menstrual cycles, and sexual dysfunction. Specifically, toxic emotions elevate cortisol levels, a hallmark of stress, which disturbs the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis—a complex system responsible for regulating hormone production and stress responses. Within the HPA axis, the hypothalamus signals the pituitary gland to release adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), which, in turn, prompts the adrenal glands to produce cortisol. Excessive cortisol production due to chronic stress can lead to imbalances in other hormones, such as oestrogen and testosterone, affecting emotional well-being and various bodily functions.

Conversely, positive emotions help stabilize hormones. Practices like meditation, deep breathing, and yoga reduce cortisol levels and promote hormonal balance. Positive emotions also enhance the release of "feel-good" hormones like endorphins and oxytocin, fostering emotional well-being.
